Let's recap. In 2009, I started running more than 3-4 miles for the first time and began training for a 1/2 marathon. Unfortunately the injury bug struck and that ended in fail.
But in 2010 I started again and this time I made it. In fact, I beat my estimate of 2:05 by a about 10 minutes. Towards the end of the training schedule I started thinking about what I might do next and the triathlon dream was born. I bought a bike and by the fall completed a triathlon, again about 10 minutes faster than I expected.
So here we are, 2011. What now? I have some friends with a year full of races all lined up. Such as Monika, (she did that in November even!) That is a great way to do self-motivation.
I do things a little differently however. I like to keep on changing. I try to find a new challenge or a new twist on an old challenge. Keeps me young I like to think. The Krispy Kreme Race was a good example of that. It's running, I've done that before. But it's also stuffing 12 doughnuts down at once. I've certainly never done that...and tried to run afterwards for that matter.
Back to this year; I have a couple of ideas. First, I've never done a bike race. I bought my road bike in June for the tri. As it turns out, of the three sports I like biking best. So I'm going to start with the San Diego Century (66 mile distance). I've already signed up along with my buddy, Pete.
I plan to do another as-yet-unpicked Olympic distance triathlon in the fall. And I'm hoping to do the Red Dress Run. That run is put on by a local drinking-and-running club. My friend Anne did it a few years back and it sounds wacky and right up my alley...if perhaps a bit heavy on the male nudity...and drinking. Hopefully they won't notice the diet coke in my cup.
That's the plan for now. It is subject to change. I had initially planned to do the Rosarito to Ensenada 50-mile bike race. But that is a social-fun ride and I couldn't get my biking buddies to do it with me. And I'm still working on another plan but it's too early to mention it now. Stay tuned!
Time to watch the sun set on those 2010 accomplishments and move on to 2011!
